How to write an op-ed.

In three steps.

"Got something to say ?

Then we are off to a good start."

1. First, Create Impact.

Traditionally this is where you are told to make your argument. However we like to say make a stance or share your opinion. Start strong. Make clear where you stand on the matter at hand, whatever that matter at hand may be to you. This is the jumping off point, and where you clarify and set up for your reader the tone for the writing ahead. Remember an Op-ed is not a news story or journalistic article. It needs your personal voice and perspective to come through. (That's what makes it so damn important.)

3. Sum It All Up

Remember to acknowledge the other side of the coin and show respect for the other perspective in the situation. You become more credible and honorable when you acknowledge your opponents argument. Finalize your thoughts strongly, as you did in your opening. This is where you reinforce everything you have given the reader up to this point, do not shy away from reaffirming positions you made prior or reminding the reader of a strong factual or emotional moment in your writing.

Through it all, be you!

What we encourage more than anything at lttop is hearing about why you have the opinions you do. The best examples in your writing will come from your own personal life experiences. When you share those, your words will ring truer and the reader will receive a different perspective and clarity about what you are trying to convey.
